About the Articling Task Force

Convocation approved the establishment of the Articling Task Force to address concerns about the articling program, relating in particular to the growing number of unplaced candidates.

A number of factors have contributed to the placement issue including:

  • increasing law school enrolments (The Law Society has no authority over law school enrolment numbers)
  • the growing number of internationally trained candidates who are seeking entry to the Law Society through the National Committee on Accreditation; and
  • economic conditions that have affected the number of available placements.

The Task Force will examine the competency-related principles that articling is intended to address, its effectiveness in addressing those principles and consider additional approaches to articling.

The Law Society has been monitoring articling issues for several years, and has invested significant resources in trying to help the profession support the current articling process.

In December 2011, Convocation approved the dissemination of the Articling Task Force Consultation Report to the profession. See above for more information on the consultation.
